Skeletal isomerization of linear unsaturated fatty acids is important in the production of branched-chain satu-ratedfattyacidswithdiverseapplications.Thisreactioncanbeefficientlycatalyzedbyferrierite(FER)zeolite.Thereaction,however,suffersfromdiffusionlimitationsinthe10-memberedringchannels.Herein,wereportamethodforthesynthesisofhierarchicallyporousFERzeoliteviatransformationofFAUprecursordrivenbyN-methylpyrrolidine(NMP)andamphiphile1,2-dimethyl-3-hexadecyl-1H-imidazol-3-iumbromide(C16dMImz)asthestructure-directingagent(SDA)andamesoporogen,respectively,underhydrothermalconditions.Thisdual-templateapproachallowstuningthemorphologicalandtexturalpropertiesofthemesoporousFERmaterialsbyvaryingtheconcentrationofthemesoporogenintheinitialgel.TheoptimizedFERsampleischaracterizedbyahigh mesoporous volume (0.19cm3g-1), large external surface area (∼120m2g-1) and reduced crystal size inthea-andc-dimensions.Thisimpliesshorteneddiffusionalpathwaysinthe10-memberedringchannels.Thesemodifications led to a significantly enhanced catalytic performance of hierarchical FER zeolite in the iso-merization of fatty acids in comparison with a bulk FER reference zeolite.
